WORLD BUDDHIST SANGHA COUNCIL

11th General Conference 「Environment Restoration for Harmonious Coexistence」

Declaration of the 11th General Conference of World Buddhist Sangha Council

Sangha from all parts of the world gather in south hemisphere,

And, create jointly the harmonious dependent co-arising;

This is the first ever general conference in Auckland

Which realizes the co-existence of living beings' equality.

The 11th General Conference of World Buddhist Sangha Council in Auckland, New Zealand from the 2nd to 6th March 2024 was attended by 497 Buddhist Sangha delegates and  observers from all over the world. During the conference, the delegates reached  a consensus after in-depth discussion on the conference theme, and issued a declaration as follows.

In today's world, human beings are facing serious challenges such as climate change, environmental  pollution, wealth gap, racial discrimination, war conflicts and  other problems. The social and environmental systems on which people rely for a healthy existence tend  to deteriorte. These changes pose a serious threat to the survival and development of human beings.

As one of the three major religions  of the  world, Buddhism advocates the ideals of compassion, equality and tolerance, provides an important ideological resource of solving the challenges, and  plays a role  in creating the common destiny of mankind.

1. Return to nature

According to Buddhism, human beings are part of the natural environment and are closely related to it. Buddhism talks about the principle of cause and effect. The human's damage to the natural environment will ultimately harm themselves in return.

Therefore as leaders of practice in Buddhist community, all of we sangha should call on Buddhists around the world to set an example of returning to the nature, respecting the nature, loving the nature and living in harmony with the nature.

2. Harmonious co-existence

The Buddha's teaching of "the non-duality of sentient beings and external circumstance" in many sutras indicates that Buddhism believes in the common destiny of human beings and the nature. It is, therefore, very clear that the ideal of harmonious co-existence between human beings and the nature has always been advocated by Buddhism. The Buddhist ideals of compassion, equality and non-violence can guide people to respect the nature, to love the nature and to co-exist harmoniously with the nature.

We call upon Buddhists all over the world to actively practice the  ideal of harmonious co-existence,promote understanding and tolerance among  different cultures, religions and races, oppose war, conserve the natural environment on which we depend  for our survival, construct a common destiny of mankind, and strive for the realization of the pure land  on earth!

3. Practical action

In order to realize the goal of returning to the nature and living in harmonious co-existence, we call on Buddhists around the world to take the following actions:

    1) To actively propagate and  practicce the Buddhist ideal of environmental conversation, to conserve the earth, to strengthen exchanges  and  co-operation, to share experiences and practices in environmental conversation, and  to jointly improve the capacity and level of environmental conversation work.

     2) To advocate the spirits of compassion, equality and tolerance, and  to promote exchanges and  co-operation among different cultures, religions and races.

       3) To participate actively in social welfare activities, help the disadvantaged groups, and contribute to the construction of a beautiful home where people and  nature can co-exist harmoniously.

Let us join hands and work together to build a better world! May all sentient beings be freed from suffering and attain happiness.
